What to Prepare Before Hiring an Architect

What to Prepare Before Hiring an Architect

Before consulting an architect, clients will have to prepare the space/land, budget, design references/moodboard, building purposes (residential/commercial space/etc.), and initial space planning outline.

Before hiring an architect, there are several important things clients should prepare. This preparation helps the consultation process become clearer, makes it easier for the architect to understand the project needs, and speeds up the development of a suitable concept.

The first thing to define is the budget. Clients should set an estimated budget for design and construction so the architect can adjust the concept, work scale, and design solutions realistically. The budget does not need to be final immediately, but it should become the starting point for discussion.

Design style references are also very helpful. Clients can collect inspiration for interiors, exteriors, lighting, landscape, house examples, or floor plans they like. These references are not meant to be copied directly, but to understand the preferred taste, spatial atmosphere, and visual character.

Clients also need to identify the building's needs and function. If the building will be used commercially, the design style and spatial requirements should be considered from the target market's perspective. If the building will be a private home, the architect needs to understand the family's lifestyle, such as the need for a children's play area, workspace, large family area, or service spaces.

The next step is to outline the space plan. Communicate the rooms you want and how they should relate to one another. The clearer the spatial needs are from the beginning, the easier it becomes for the architect to create a concept that is functional, comfortable, and aligned with how the client will use the building.
